What is the cost to replace the lithium ion battery in the Volt? I see it's going to come with an 8 year warranty, but if the battery dies and needs to be replaced what's it going to cost? Will GM be giving full replacement with a new battery for free, or just pro-rated dollar amount of remaining life to 8 years?

Anyone who owns a laptop computer knows very well that the ability for even the best lithium ion battery goes down over time. A car with a lithium ion battery is not going to be any different. Being that none of these batteries, even in the Prius, has been on the road for an extended length of time, we really don't know, do we? However, it is guaranteed that after some number of re-charges it will need to be replaced. Also, you know for sure that replacement of these batteries is going to require it to be done by GM - you aren't going to be able to do it yourself or take it in to Pep Boys to have it done.

Just drove a new Honda Civic Hybrid 100 miles today...and did NOT have to stop to recharge the battery and got better than 44 mpg and it was around half the price of a VOLT! Actually, with no plug, the car charged the battery all by itself when going downhill...the free power source of gravity.

To help understand the Volt better how many kilowatt hours of electricity does it take to charge the battery for 40 miles? When you use the gasolene motor how many miles per gallon (regular or premium?) does the car get under motor powered generated electricity? Which website has specifications for the Volt? Does the car move only under electric power (electric car) or does sometimes the motor provide torque to move the car like a hybrid car? Does the lease require a downpayment of $2500 or $10000 less $7500 rebate?

It is the same old story with GM..they build a dud and expect people to buy them. I say they sell/give away 40-50 thousand of these and in doing that will have to drop the price to about half price to even do this. End of story! You can be riding in a Lexus for less $$$ and get 30 mpg! And on top of it all, they are putting this out at a time when the economy is in the tank and going to get worse. And gas is down in price and ALL fuel efficient cars are setting on the lots while people buy the big ones again. CEO Obama will have to do something about that to get his Company, GM, to sell them, but again I ask, WHY would anyone pay nearly twice the price for a Volt over a Prius or Honda Hybrid? These two are cordless! Can you see people taking a trip in one....and staying in a motel with a drop cord pulled in through a window to charge the battery and then ONLY go 40 miles before you have to run off the motor burning high test gas! You could go on a green energy vacation of 1200 miles in 30 days stopping every 40 miles to recharge. The other thing is using electricity to charge them will be a problem as half our electricity is made with coal and the CEO of GM, Obama wants coal to be done away with and there is no cost effective alternative. If you had millions of these cars(wont happen) charging everyday, electricity rates would skyrocket even more that they will anyway!
If I am spending $40K, it aint gonna be on a golf cart!

Is this Gas or electric??? 300 miles on a gas driven generator using premium gas and a whole 40 miles on a battery?? Sounds more like a gas than electric to me. I'll bet we are employing alot of American workers building batteries, oh wait they are made in South Korea. I like the concept but I don't think this is what an electric car is all about. I think this is going to be a dude for Obama Motors.

I would bet the majority of these Volts will be bought by, guess who?....Uncle Sam! There will be an initial number of people buy them and then be sorry they did. I do think there is a market for a glorified golf card for local trips to the grocery store or the mall within a few miles of home, but this aint it. I would look into one of those for say $10K or so, but NOT $40 k with a huge govco(your tax dollar) subsidy!

I have a 2005 Civic Hybrid that cost me $20000 new. I can get in it and drive to California and back on reuglar gas avg over 40 mpg. At some point I will I will get a new hybrid/fuel efficient car. BUT: I would not have time to stop and charge the batteries for hours and hours..dumb. I can get a new Civic for around $22000, not $40K plus. Obama is not the CEO of Honda. Why would anyone spend $40K for this vehicle...it will be a flop aided by US government rebate that will cost probably $20K a car to the taxpayer. This is lunacy!
What is anyone thinking that will make this and even dumber, anyone buy the thing. Get yourself a long drop cord to carry with it! Also, be prepared to buy high test gas for the back up motor...more expense!

I THINK A LOT OF INOVATION HAS BEEN INCORPERATED INTHESE VECHICLES , THEY HOWEVER DO NOT SEEM TO HAVE PHOTO ELECTRIC PANELS WITHIN THIER ROOFS OR TRUNKS SO THEY COULD RECHARGE WHILE BEING PARKED IN ALOT OR ADRIVEWAY.

I have followed the coming of the plug-in, and the then the volt, very closely. Last night I went to the plug-in conference in San Jose. Seeing the Volt live made me want it more than ever. The chevy people went out of their way to talk of the $7,500 rebate available from the government that made the steep price of 41K a little more palatable. Today when I went to the dealership to give them the large deposit that they required, I was not prepared to be told that there was a 10K mark up. 51K? For real? Obviously these cars are not made for me or anyone that I know. I am bitterly disappointed.
